This 2-hour introductory course teaches justice system professionals the key principles of evidence-based practices: risk, need, responsivity, and effective intervention. Case studies, exercises, and scenario-based situations are used to increase understanding of how to use these proven practices to help people stay law-abiding.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the four key principles—risk, need, responsivity, and intervention—that research indicates are important for achieving risk reduction
  • Understand how and when to effectively apply rewards and responses to non-compliance
  • Indentify interventions that work best in helping people stay law-abiding, and why
  • Learn policies and practices that can actually increase recidivism (i.e., do harm) and which approaches are more effective

Presenters: Susan Burke, M.A., and Rick Parsons, M.S.
